BACKGROUND

Brass Eye saw the return of an absent Chris Morris to our screens, early in 1997. Having not made
any televisual appearances since The Day Today, bar a few cameos on daytime TV, no one quite
new what to expect from the show. Most believed that it would take the form of some sort of "media
terrorism", a phrase so widely used at the time in attempts to summarise the genre, but none were
expecting the celebrity spoofery accompanying.
Brass Eye was about revealing the whores, seeking out they who would say anything written on an
auto-cue when tempted by the dangled carrot of favourable television exposure, and a comfortable
pay-check. It was also about deconstructing the mess of television news and current affairs
programming - an 'untouchable' stalwart of the modern viewers infomation gathering sources.
From Kilroy to Panorama, Morris carefully unravelled the knots and pulled apart the strands, to
reveal the hypocrisy and bullshit that make up our daily visual feasts.

The celebrity spoof only appeared in the grotesque form of a Gotcha, thrust into an individuals
face by the twisted hands of man-gnome, Noel Edmonds. It was about "hilarious" situations, and
"crazy" stunts - all without purpose, and all done in the "best possible taste", with everyone the
greatest of friends at the end.

Such gobshite could never the place of Morris, and he naturally twisted the art into a subversive,
yet productive, method of satire.
