BACKGROUND

Well ahead of it's time, Doomwatch followed a group of scientist's who investigated
unexpected threats to the enviroment and humanity. This was proberly the first 'green'
television drama series.

It was a unique show and in the first season alone gained audience figures of twelve million
people. By the third series, the characters had come and gone and the emphasis was more
on human conflict than the issues of the first and second season.

Pedler and Davies walked away from the series saying 'They have made a total travesty of the
programme!' Not suprisingly it was not renewed for a fourth season and it was not until 1999
that Channel 5 in the UK, broadcast a whole new pilot with Trevor Eve called Winter Angel.

TRIVIA FAX

Simon Oates actually received hate mail from some strange viewers thinking his character let
Toby Wren die. 'It's not as if I wrote the bloody episode!' he said.

When he joined the series, Robert Powell asked that Toby Wren be killed off after a year.

Creators Kit Pedler & Gerry Davies had been responsible for the creation of the Cybermen
in Doctor Who five years earlier.
