| BACKGROUND
The Fantastic Four was originally
created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby as the
flagship title of Marvel Comics
in 1961. The comic featured the adventures of a quartet of
adventurers who gained superhuman
powers when they were exposed to cosmic radiation
during an experimental space flight.
It was adapted for Saturday morning
TV by Hanna-Barbera in 1967.
The show was faithful in adapting
the early issues of the comic book and featured
popular FF villians such
as Dr. Doom, Galactus, the Mole Man, the Super Skrull and others.
The Fantastic Four ran for
two original seasons and one season of repeats before bowing
out in 1970. Later in the decade,
The
New Fantastic Four hit the airwaves, with The Human
Torch replaced by wisecracking robot
H.E.R.B. The new show lasted only one season, but the
original foursome returned with
new episodes fifteen years later as part of Marvel Action Hour. |
