BACKGROUND

Chris Carter has said that this show was an influence on The X-Files when he was creating it. 
Carl Kolchak started out as a novel called The Kolchak Tapes. written by a journalist called Jeff
Rice in the 1960's.the manuscript was pushed around various publishers with little interest.
Then the still unpublished novel came to the attention of a producer/director callled Dan Curtis.

Dan was best known for his work on Dark Shadows,this program made a unique first by starring
a vampire (Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins)in a television show. It was the vampire element in
the Kolchak story that also appealed to Curtis, as well as Rice's treatment of that theme,
Rice had created a modern gothic story that combined thrills and humour which became a Kolchak trademark
