BACKGROUND

What can be said about The Prisoner that hasn't been said before. It is TV shows like this
that the term Cult TV was invented for. A programme that is a slice of television history
which still generates debates today.

This was McGoohans greatest triumph. He came up with the idea, wrote and directed some
of the episodes, starred in it and was Producer. Audiences tuning in expecting more of the
same kind of show as Dangerman were in for a shock. What they found was a surreal, thought
provoking show that never let up for one moment in it's inventive execution.

The show followed the adventures of No.6, an ex-spy who resigns from his job only to
find himself in a secret village with no means of escape. Constantly bombarded with
interogation tests by the various No.2's, he uses every means at his disposal to cause
corruption and find out the identity of the mysterious No.1. Often imitated, but never
bettered The Prisoner remains the ultimate Cult TV show with interest in force over
nearly forty years after it's original airing.
