BACKGROUND

One of the most popular ITC series of the sixties, The Saint ran for 118 episodes between
1962 and 1969 and made Roger Moore an international star. Many of the episodes were
adapted from the Leslie Charteris books but were watered down for it's new TV medium
disregarding the more violent acts of Simon Templar that were seen in the novels and indeed
the films of the 1930's and 1940's such as 'The Saint in New York' (1938).

Produced by Robert S. Baker for his company New World, they had originally approached
Patrick McGoohan to star as Templar but he refused to play a character that was so
promiscuous (he was to also turn down the role of 007 for the same reasons) so they
ended up with the inspired choice of Roger Moore.

The Saint came to an end in 1969 and had made Roger Moore a household name. At this
stage Moore was not looking to do any more episodic television but it would be only two
years before he teams up with Tony Curtis for The Persuaders!
And as we all know, Roger Moore would go on to play that other great fictional character
James Bond 007 from 1973 to 1985.
