RAVENSWOOD ROCK
Situated just north of the village
lies an ancient stone known as the ‘Ravenswood Rock’, a natural
outcrop from the early Palaeolithic
era (2.5 million years ago). Legend tells a more colourful story
though; one day the devil was flying
with the rock so he could drop it on the town of Little Biggott.
Becoming tired along the way, he
promptly dropped the stone on Ravenswood and crushed to death
the local basket weaver Old Mother
Fosse. Folklore says that if you walk around the stone twelve times
at midnight, you will hear her weaving
one of her baskets whilst crying out in agony.
ARTHUR’S CROSS
A crossroads by the village is supposed
to be haunted by a phantom badger (and not a black hound
that is common in these cases).
Seeing the badger with it’s eerie glowing eyes will bring misfortune to
the weary traveller unless you leave
a coin on top of the nearby Celtic cross. The badger was apparently
seen as recently as 1971 but reports
suggest that this sighting may have been self-induced!
THE GHOST OF JACK THE BULL
The village has many ghost stories
but the most well known is that of highwayman Jack the Bull. After
years of robbing and murdering innocent
travellers, the authorities finally cornered Jack in Ravenswood
and after a short trial he was hanged.
It is said that on moon swept nights, Jack can be seen riding
through the village on his phantom
horse looking for potential victims. An old Eighteenth Century rhyme
reads ‘If ever you see the spirit
of Jack, turn about and head on back’.
FAIRIE’S BRIDGE
Along the River Raven lies Fairies
Bridge, an old stone bridge that dates back to the Tenth Century.
Legend says that when you pass over
the bridge, you must say ‘hello’ to the little people or bad
luck will fall upon you.

RAVENSWOOD LEY-LINE
A powerful ley-line runs through
the village incorporating the Church, The Ravenswood Rock, Fairies
Bridge, Milton Meadow, The Devil’s
Hump and a Celtic cross. This particular ley has the distinctiveness
of being bent halfway through!
CROP CIRCLES
A spate of crop circles started
appearing in the fields around Ravenswood in 1991 and attracted investigators
from all over the country. Starting
off with basic circles, they soon developed into complex pictograms.

THE RAVENSWOOD UFO
In the 1960’s, Ravenswood had it’s
own UFO incident that changed the personality of the village forever.
On a mild autumns evening, a local
farmer George Marlow, witnessed mysterious lights hovering about in
Milton Meadow and went to investigate
and was not seen for three days. When he turned up, the farmer
talked deliriously about what he
described as multiple coloured lights in the sky and his eventual encounter
with ‘grey beings’. The only exisiting
footage of the phenomenon was taken by a local librarian who was out
walking with a cine camera and managed
to capture a few remarkable images.
