INTRODUCTION On this investigation, we had teamed up with two other groups and individuals; Extreme Paranormal and Renegade Spirit along with Paranormal Investigator David Vee leading the groups and guest medium Carol Stirling for a night at this historic property. We had worked with most of the investigators before (notably at Abingdon Town Football Club and Southsea Castle) and we were looking forward to what the night might hold for us all. HISTORY Built around 1145 and the oldest building in Wotton-Under-Edge, The Ancient Ram Inn is reputed to have been built over a five thousand year old pagan burial ground. In 1350 Maurice De Bathe bought The Ram with tenants Peter Le Couk and his wife Margaret resided there for an unknown period. The property stayed in the name of Maurice De Bathe for 171 years. The Ram changed hands frequently right up to 1968 where the current owner John Humphries now resides along with many uninvited guests HAUNTINGS / FOLKLORE There are many alleged reports regarding the spirits of the Ram. There have been numerous reports about evil entities that reside here including an Incubus, a creature that’s bread of negative energy, a Priest who was murdered in one of the bedrooms and various links to Witchcraft and Devil Worship. The episode of Most Haunted that was filmed here has proberly helped to fuel the rumours and legends of the property and its folklore.
GROUND FLOOR Our team (consisting of Marq, Alan, Karen, Vicky and Andrew) arrived slightly late and was informed by Richard of Renegade Spirit that there had already been activity and possession. We greeted everyone and had a walk around to familiarise ourselves with the location. Whilst upstairs, Vicky thought she saw what looked like a cat jumping onto a cushion. She had no prior knowledge of the building’s history and there are no pets in the house but there have been many reports of a feline spirit around the place. After filming some quick interviews with Richard and Carol, Alan and Marq headed into the Barn area to see what could be picked up. After a while, Alan was sensing a figure associated with the Clergy and this was interesting as the building had been a Church House many years ago. We rejoined Dan Shepard and Al Bartlett in the main living area where Alan began sensing the presence of a male from the Civil War period. It was a this point that Al seemed to be channelling a spirit called Michael who had come through to him. This was not a pleasant entity and it seemed to have a problem with fellow team member Will and was constantly trying to grab hold of him until eventually Al came back through. This was to be an ongoing situation with trancing at the Ram throughout the evening. BISHOP’S ROOM David Vee had set up an ongoing infrared detector in the Bishop’s Room on the First Floor and was recording straight to DVD. It was here that Alan, Marq, Vicky, Jane and Laurie decided to hold a vigil as the area has had strong reports of activity in the past. As we sat quietly, Alan was sensing a woman and child who would stand by the window looking out into the street as though they were waiting for the return of someone. It was interesting that with the Ram’s reputation as a place full of evil spirits, Alan was not picking up on any of this and was only getting peaceful energy. We sat for quite a while here until we heard a loud rap from the window and the door as Karen began trancing and started screaming and becoming very agitated. Calming her down, she seemed genuinely upset and couldn’t seem to find her bearings. As it turned out, the rap on the window were other team members trying to get our attention to let them back in the building after another possession! The door on the other hand was more intriguing as there was no one outside at the time. With Kieran and Will checking in on us, we all decided to take a break. WITCH’S ROOM With so many possessions occurring, it was getting difficult to capture it on video until Marq was taken to the Witch’s Room where Al was going under again. This turned out to be an ongoing possession, as the spirit seemed to have quite a hold on him. The team managed to pin him to the bed and Michael (through Al) was struggling to break free. After at least three attempts, we finally got Al out of the building and back to himself although he was naturally exhausted. CONCLUSION The Ancient Ram Inn was a fascinating location but desperately in need of funding for restoration. With Al, Karen and Karl all experiencing alleged possession from spirit, it had certainly been an eventful night. From a rational standpoint, the amount of channelling going on was very questionable as there is no proof whatsoever that spirit had actually entered the body other than hearing a deeper voice along with grunts and groans. Other little bits of activity had happened through out the night that we were not witness to and we all realised that there were too many people present in such a small location but our night at The Ancient Ram Inn was certainly an enjoyable one. |
