INTRODUCTION In a departure from our own investigations, I had joined Phil Whyman’s Dead Haunted Night’s team to investigate The Red Lion pub in Avebury. The pub is a 17th Century coaching Inn and the only public house in England that is situated within a stone circle. At over five thousand years old, the Avebury Stone Circle is as mysterious as it is impressive. A World Heritage Site that also includes Silbury Hill, The Ridgeway ancient pathway, Windmill Hill, the Sanctuary and West Kennett Long Barrow, this prehistoric monument was re-erected in the 1930’s by Alexander Keiller but is now only a shadow of it’s former self with many of the stones still missing. NIGHT DRAWS IN As night draws in, the group embark on a walk around the Stones. Phil gives a brief history surrounding the circle’s mystery as we explored the Outer Circle. I have been here many times and the monument is one of the most fascinating places in the world. As closing time beckons, the team move back to the pub. After a briefing, we split into three teams and I joined a group in the restaurant area with Team Leader Vince. This apparently has been an active area and we all sat quietly to see what would present itself. We heard faint footsteps from above us and Vince radio’s over to find the location of the other teams. The footsteps were more than likely associated with the groups on the first floor as opposed to anything paranormal. I took a lone vigil in the Gent’s Restroom but although very still, nothing occurred. Regular checks are made using thermal and EMF meters by other team members. Phil had placed a trigger object on top of the well but no movement was reported. FIRST FLOOR BEDROOMS After a break, the team moved to the bedrooms upstairs, alleged places of paranormal activity. We performed various call out’s in the Keiller Room as well as taking turns to sit alone in the adjoining Swindon Room. Although nothing occurred in these rooms, a photo of an unusual coloured light anomaly was caught in the Keiller Room. After another break, we moved into the Avenue Room where the alleged sightings of two young children have been seen. Here, we attempted communication but once again nothing of significance occurred. CONCLUSION Although an enjoyable investigation, we left the pub tired and exhausted. For a usually active location, the Red Lion pub had decided to keep it’s paranormal secret’s hidden from us. I do recommend a night’s investigation with the Dead Haunted Night’s team and I have further locations booked which includes Peterborough Museum, Coalhouse Fort in Essex and Preston Manor in Brighton. |
